Bank Showcases Artist of the Month

November 22, 2010

Town & Country Bank salutes Siera Schmidt, the Bank’s first Artist of the Month. This new program, initiated by Town & Country Bank, celebrates the talents of young artists in the Watertown school system. Schmidt, who was selected by Watertown High School Art Teacher Dave Pawl, is in her senior year at Watertown High School.

Each month during the school year, the Bank showcases a student artist’s work in its lobby and posts the work on the Facebook at Town & Country Bank, Watertown. Viewers are encouraged to vote for their favorite piece on Facebook or in the lobby. With votes tabulated, an Artist of the Year will be announced in June 2011.

Schmidt, who first became interested in art in middle school - because it was a mandatory class, primarily focuses on photography. “I fell in love with photography because my dad, who photographs weddings on weekends, took the time to teach me about 35mm film,” she said. “I can’t get enough of the darkroom,” she added. “I wish more kids understood how much fun they could have developing their own pictures.”

Graduating in June, Schmidt plans on pursuing a degree in photography. Her dream job – to work for National Geographic as she enjoys capturing nature with her camera. “You can see in my pieces that I explore the theme man versus nature and the results that man has on nature.”

Nate Salas, Business Banking Officer - Town & Country Bank, is spearheading the Bank’s Artist of the Month program. “Our schools are brimming with artistic talent; unless, however, a person walks into a school, most goes unnoticed. The Bank’s goal for the Artist of the Month program was to bring art out of the school classrooms and into a public place for people to enjoy. Who knows, we could be launching the career of the next Picasso or Rembrandt right here in Watertown,” said Salas.

Schmidt’s work will be exhibited at the Bank located at
104 W. Main Street in Watertown until December 10.
